Getting Your Motorcycle License

2004 Honda Shadow Aero

This is my bike. Getting my motorcycle license is something I thought about doing for years. After finally doing it, I realized that I was procrastinating for no reason, and the joys of riding should not be put off.

In honor of the summer weather and my commitment to re-releasing my old podcasts, here is one I did on the topic of getting your motorcycle license. Enjoy.

This may be a bit ignorant but I’ll put it out there. I like all the benefits of having a motorcycle but aren’t they easier to steal than cars? It just seems like parking a bike leaves you more vulnerable than parking a car. Maybe it’s just me.

It does seem that way. I keep mine locked in my garage overnight, and I think most motorcycle owners do as well. But it’s almost as much to keep them out of the weather than to protect them from theft. I think most cars are stolen for parts, and the market for stolen motorcycle parts is probably a lot smaller.

In any case, I don’t see it as any more risky than convertibles — even if they’re locked you can just cut the top to get in. Also, I think more cars are broken into rather than stolen, and bikes generally don’t have radios and other electronics worth stealing.

I don’t claim to understand the motorcycle theft economy, but I do know that insurance is very cheap for a bike, so there doesn’t seem to be a major problem with theft.

I suppose you’re right. To me, anyway, I would just feel more vulnerable parking a bike when I went into a store or work or something rather than a car.
