Resetting a password in Ubuntu without root access

Here's a quickie I had to figure out yesterday to help a co-worker.

boot into grub menu

Hold down the shift key while booting. The grub menu will appear.

recovery mode

From the grub menu, choose the recovery mode option

root shell

From the recovery mode menu, choose root shell

make drive writable

mount -rw -o remount /

reset password

Use the passwd command to reset the user's password.

moral of the story

Always encrypt your home directory, or anyone with physical access to your machine can have it all in about a minute.
